Elle TENS Machine RentalsThe Elle TENS machine is a small handheld device that uses mild electrical impulses through the skin to stimulate nerve fibers. In labour, a woman can use a TENS machine to help reduce back pain while having full control over the machine and the impulses.

TENS (which stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a safe and effective means of combating pain during the process of childbirth. It works by sending comfortable, gentle pulses to the nerves through four electrode pads placed on the skin. It utilizes the Gate Theory of Pain Control by gently stimulating your sensory nerves to suppress or block the pain signal to the brain. When these pain signals are blocked, it becomes more difficult for the brain to register the sensation of pain (or it opts for the more pleasant pulsing sensation). Freedom of movement means that she is able to use other comfort measures at the same time. All of the settings are pre-set, so there is no guess work or fuss – just optimal pain relief when and where you need it!

Endorphins (often referred to as the body’s natural opiates) are produced naturally by the body to manage pain. High endorphin levels can make you feel alert, attentive, and even euphoric after birth, as you begin to get to know and care for your baby. In this early, postpartum period, endorphins and the hormone oxytocin are believed to play a role in strengthening the mother-infant relationship. TENS can promote the release of endorphins through a comfortable tapping sensation that results in pain relief even after the unit is turned off.

The Elle is a great addition to every kind of birth. Whether you’re planning a home birth, a natural hospital birth, a birth with an epidural, or even a scheduled c-section, you can benefit from a TENS machine. After giving birth, you can use the Elle TENS for:

  • postnatal pains
  • post-operative pain following a c-section
  • shoulder pain from breast feeding
  • menstrual pain

When should I rent a TENS machine?
We rent Elle TENS units for 5 weeks at a time and suggest you come in any time after your 37th week of pregnancy; this gives you time to play with the unit before you go into labour, so you know how it feels and how it works. Then you have it when you do go into labour and for a week or two afterward to help with recovery pain. It is important that you DO NOT use a TENS machine prior to your 37th week, unless under medical supervision, as the pads are placed over sensitive pressure points on the back that could possibly stimulate labour prematurely. We cannot reserve the unit for you, just come in when you’re ready.

How much does an Elle TENS rental cost?
You can rent an Elle TENS unit from Mothering Touch for 5 weeks for only $80; this includes everything you need, including new electrodes and instructions.

The Elle TENS can help you to remain in control, stay alert, and considerably reduce drug intake. Most importantly, there are no known side effects for you or your baby.

Is TENS rental covered by insurance?
This depends on your benefits plan. Some plans require a note from a care provider, and some do not. You do not have to be pregnant to have your TENS covered by insurance. Many people will be prescribed a TENS unit for back or shoulder pain, and even menstrual cramps.

Can I use the Elle TENS at the hospital?
Yes! The Elle TENS can be worn any time you are not in the water, unless you have epidural or spinal anesthesia in place. It can be worn with an external fetal monitor in place, and can be particularly useful in situations where mobility is limited or the baby is in a posterior or asynclitic position. Even if you are planning for an epidural, a TENS machine can help you to relax and manage pain in the earlier stages of labour, before you are ready to be admitted to the hospital, and later while you are waiting for the anesthesiologist.

Can I use a TENS if I’m planning a water birth?
Yes, but not while you are in the water. Most midwives suggest waiting until an active labour pattern is established (often around 4-5cm dilated) before getting into the birth tub. The TENS can help you to stay relaxed and in control when you are not in the tub.

Can I use An Ordinary TENS Machine?
Not as effectively. Babycare Elle TENS machines are specifically designed for childbirth. They use larger pads than conventional TENS and include a booster button, which is very important for relieving pain during contractions.

Are Babycare Elle TENS machines safe?
Babycare makes only the highest quality TENS products, known for their excellent design and ease of use. Babycare has an active medical device license with Health Canada for the Elle TENS, and has been shown to be effective for labour and afterward.

Do not use any TENS machine before the 37th week of pregnancy unless under medical supervision, as the pads are placed over sensitive pressure points on the back that could possibly stimulate labour prematurely.
