Parenting The Newborn For Adoptive and Intended Parents was designed for parents who are waiting to adopt a newborn baby, or who are expecting a baby through surrogacy. These parents-to-be need to feel prepared and supported to care for their new baby. So, in collaboration with an Adoption Agency, we designed this course, taught by experienced childbirth educators and postpartum doulas.
What do babies need? We approach the issue of baby care from the perspective of the baby. What does this little person need from us? How can we meet those needs?
Will the baby bond to us? We will pay special attention to the issues around attachment. These are a source of concern for all parents, but especially for adoptive parents. What does attachment look like? What can we do to forge a strong bond with our baby?
How will we feed the baby? We look in depth at baby feeding, by bottle or by breast, and at what we can do to facilitate good practices from the very beginning. We examine up-to-date information, and debunk myths that can lead to confusion and difficulties.
How do we take care of a baby? We will cover all aspects of baby care in the first 3 months – from bathing and diapering to carriers and car seats. We discuss safe sleep practices, and examine our expectations of baby sleep, and how that sleep changes over the firsts months.
Will we be able to keep the baby safe? A First Aid Instructor will come to teach Infant Fist Aid and CPR.
