Our homebirth kit was designed in consultation with the registered midwives of Greater Victoria. Every practice has slightly different requirements though, so check with your midwife if you are not sure. You will also need the following items:
General...
- 1 Roll of paper towels
- 2 Large garbage bags for trash and laundry
- 2 Large ziplock bags for placenta
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- 1 Package Newborn Diapers
- Ibuprophen or Tylenol
- Arnica tablets (ask your midwife about strength)
Linens...
- 2 flat sheets
- 2 fitted sheets
- 4-6 large old towels
- 8 wash cloths
- 12 large receiving blankets
- a little hat to keep baby’s head warm
Your Choice of Food...
- Favourite easily-digested snacks for early labour
- Favourite juice / drink for labour (herbal teas and miso soup work well)
- Honey
- Hard candies
- Snacks for birth helpers (a pot of soup is nice)
- Favourite food for Mom after baby is born
Optional Items For Relaxation...
- A birth ball (55cm if you are under 5'5"”, 65cm if you are taller than that)
- Massage tools
- A selection of music for labour
- An electric fan (for warm conditions)
- A crock pot to keep water warm for compresses
- Extension cords for heating pads, fans, radios etc
- Warm socks
- Favorite old nighties or t-shirts (have 2-3 so you can change)
- Hairclips / headband / elastics
- Magic-bag or tube sock full of rice
- A bucket or large bowl (in case you feel sick)
