About Our Family

We are mothers, daughters, doulas and friends - we're here for you.

The Mothering Touch Centre is an owner-operated, family-run enterprise. Our mission is to provide support, classes and information to new and expectant parents. We started out in 2004 in a tiny little storefront at the Oak Bay junction. We moved downtown to much more spacious and convenient premises on Fort Street in 2008. We offer a wide range of classes and drop-ins for parents and their children, from pregnancy to age 3. Our retail store features products to make pregnancy and early parenting and babyhood more comfortable, more convenient and more fun!

Linda Shubert

Linda has been working at Mothering Touch since May 2010. She loves and is excited by the entire concept of the centre and how it offers a safe place for parents to meet, get support, or just have a chat about what is going on in their day. A supportive community for parents has always been an important issue for her.

Her three children are all young adults who constantly surprise and amaze their parents.

Linda enjoys her days at Mothering Touch being surrounded by kids, babies, new and expectant parents. The best part of her day is being asked to hold a baby. She is, after all, a grandmother in waiting.

Kaarina Lenk

Kaarina began working at Mothering Touch in August 2010.  Having grown up mostly in Victoria, she feels fortunate to be a part of such a fabulous team in a city that she loves.  She is happy to have the opportunity to talk to and sometimes reassure new parents.

Kaarina's interests have always centred on women's health issues including pregnancy and birth.  Since the births of her own 2 children, she wants to be a support for other families through the difficult and memorable first years of pregnancy and parenting.

Kaarina's recent obsessions are her newly dug strawberry patch and getting her laundry out on the line and back in again before it rains (a dangerous game!)

Tanya Hunter

Tanya has been working at Mothering Touch since July. She is a birth and postpartum doula and has just finished her Breastfeeding Educator training. Her favourite bit of Mothering Touch is The Nest (she gave it its new name.) She loves that it's a safe and cozy place where parents can come and feed or care for their babies, or just rest from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

Hannah Bild-Enkin

Hannah is a Junior Staff Member.  She has grown up around babies, birth and breastfeeding talk and is happy now to use some of that knowledge to help out in the family business.  She works in the store on Saturdays to help pay for figure skating lessons!

Laura Warren

Laura has been teaching our Childbirth Preparation Series and Workshops since 2007.  She is a Birth doula, a trained Breastfeeding Educator and a Lamaze-Certified Childbirth Educator.

Laura is the mother of three grown-up daughters and is the besotted grandmother of lovely little Cyrus.

"What I love the most about teaching is sitting surrounded by a group of expectant parents in discussion, and seeing at the end of the class how their faces change from fearful ones to strong, confident and powerful ones; ready to confront this new and challenging process called childbirth.

Jay Duncan

Jay has been teaching Childbirth Preparation and conducting hospital tours for the Mothering Touch Centre since 2007.  After the very positive birth experiences she had with her children, Jessi in 1996 and Sam in 1998, she decided to make birth work her career.  She had always been fascinated with the mystery and power of birth, so it was no mistake that she decided to work in this field.

Jay trained as a Prenatal Educator through Douglas College in 1998 and trained as a Postpartum Doula through the Seattle Midwifery School in 2002.  She is also a DONA-trained Birth Doula and taught prenatal classes with the YMCA from 2004-2007.

Jay feels honored to be a part of the most amazing and intimate part of a woman's life: the birth of her first child and the expansion of a new family.  She is constantly learning, developing and growing as a teacher and birth doula and is excited to work in such a nurturing and dynamic work environment as the Mothering Touch.

Do Stier

Do lives in Vancouver, B.C. and has been working with childbearing families in a variety of contexts for the past 25 years.  In addition to her private practice as a birth and postpartum doula, Do teaches childbirth classes at Douglas College, the Youth Pregnancy & Parenting Program (YPPP) at Evergreen Community Health Centre, and for the S.M.I.L.E. program (Supporting Mothers Integrating Love and Education) of St. Leonard’s Youth Services.  Do also works as a doula mentor for the South Community Birth Program and is the coordinator of doula volunteers for YPPP.  Her enthusiasm for the work of serving childbearing families infuses her teaching at every level. You will leave the course both equipped and encouraged!

Elke Schlufter

Elke teaches our Prenatal Yoga Classes.  She is a Certified Yoga Instructor and graduated from MokSana Yoga Center in Victoria in 2007.  Her yoga journey began in 1984 when she took her first yoga classes.  When she was pregnant in 1994, she discovered pregnancy yoga and since then has remained convinced that yoga is one of the best ways a woman can prepare her body, mind and spirit to meet the challenges of pregnancy and birth with strength, confidence and calm.

Over the years, Elke has been very fortunate to experience the teachings of many inspirational teachers from different traditions in Europe and Canada.  She continues to learn from every teacher and every student she meets.

In her teaching, she approaches poses mindfully and gently, teaching alignment and working on opening energy channels in the body.  In movement and stillness she encourages conscious breathing, body awareness and guidance by inner wisdom.  Elke strongly believes that the practice of yoga can bring a greater sense of wholeness and balance to every aspect of our lives.

Ann-Kathrin Lehsen-Martins

Ann-Kathrin teaches our Mom & Toddler, Mom & Baby and Prenatal Yoga classes.

She is the mother of two beautiful boys and has developed a yoga practice along side them as well as with them.  She has her MA in Fine and Applied Arts and a Degree in Movement and is a Certified Yoga Instructor.

Carol Adams

Carol has been practicing yoga for many years and is a certified yoga teacher, graduating from Moksana Yoga Centre here in Victoria.

She is very happy to be able to share the wonderful benefits yoga can bring to expectant moms, helping them to prepare body, mind and spirit for their new role and also to new moms, giving them the opportunity to regain their strength and sense of well-being and to breathe and smile!

Carol and her husband have raised both their boys here in Victoria and now also have two grandsons.

Layla Cochrane

Layla teaches our Sign and Sing with your Baby Drop-in Class.

She is the mother of two little girls and a Certified Independent Baby Signs Instructor.  After discovering the wonderful benefits of signing with her own two children, Layla began offering workshops, play classes and signing resources to families and caregivers in Victoria.  Three years later she is still extremely passionate about signing with young children.
